Duke, what specs system you got. Gamestone gave me some great help a while ago with G4. Played really slow on my config. All I changed was multithreading from 1 to 0. Game runs OK. Does slow down a bit, but its very playabe. Also what version of mame you running. I have Mameui64 the best I think.

Update for Duke.

Turning multithreading to 1 in the mame.ini file may speed it up.

Also turning the prescale to 1 (default is 2) may help but will make the rendering look bad.

Turning the sound off helps too.

It's not the speed of the computer that's slowing it down, it's just poor game emulation.

The Multithreading is for more than one core cpu.

I gave this game a spin on MAMEUI64 0.153 this week. It runs much faster and the graphics are improved, but now the emulator crashes either in the middle of stage 3 or near the end of the final stage. It's fun to play while it lasts though, I can't see why it was never ported to consoles.

This has taken much longer than I thought it would but the day has come.

Solar Assault Gradius and Solar Assault Revised have been added to MAME 0.188, I've upload the roms to the download section, I'll try to add some screen shots later.

Are there any differences among the games besides the regional differences? I did play Solar Assault on MAME a while back, and while the game was pretty good, that last stage was...ugh.

There are three versions of the game.

Solar Assault Gradius - Japanese first release
Solar Assault Revised - Japanese second release
Solar Assault - US release

Solar Assault Gradius doesn't look that much different from the later releases.

Revised looks like more of an updated patched version of the game, more like a 1.1 update rather than totally new game.

Solar Assault Revised and Solar Assault seam to be the same game apart from the title screen from what I've played.

Someone else will have to play them for a more in-depth look as I just don't have the time at the moment.

Solar Assault Revised (ver JAA) [slrassltj]

I've been about an hour into Solar Assault Revised and I'll say for one thing it plays much faster than in previous versions of MAME. Still a few hiccups but then my laptop is 5+ years old. I'm still running into crashes midway through stage 3 and on the final stage. Seems identical to the US version. I've taken a few screen caps below.

Lord British kicks some serious ass in this game.

Solar Assault (ver JAA) [slrassltj1]

Started into Solar Assault Japanese version and there are a few differences. Being the first release of the game, as it seems less polished than the other two versions. Some enemy placements are different and bosses are lacking certain attacks.

The HUD has a green color scheme.

Stage 1's background, Big Core's animation when it appears.

Stage 2 "Fierce Blaze" doesn't appear in this version and is instead the "Abyssal Forest". There is a white fog in this stage now and the layout is changed a bit. There are segmented centipede-like enemies different from the ones in Revised. The orbs that the boss releases has a different graphic, and he doesn't throw his boomerang hook.

Stage 3's King Tut boss has red protruding eyes, and doesn't fire an orb shot with the small moai.

Big Core Mk. II has a slightly different appearance and attack patterns. Doesn't release the spinning beams or fire the giant laser.

The game crashed after that.

I'll report back with any more findings.

Wow, seems to be running very well nowadays, going to check what results can I get on a i5-2400/GT 1030/4GB RAM
